Utah MFT Programs

There are two universities that offer various graduate programs for MFT education that is designated by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).

Both institutions are very popular in the state, as Brigham Young University is nationally recognized and has both a Master's degree and PhD offering in the field.

Utah State University is the other school that offers a Master's program. Accreditation from the COAMFTE showcases the program's high academic marks and experienced faculty members to give students proper education and be prepared for their upcoming career.

Brigham Young University

The School of Family Life offers the Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy, which has eight full-time faculty members that work with students to prepare them for the field of mental health and how to help patients from a variety of backgrounds.

Eventual graduates will become competent in MFT theory, clinical skills, research, and evaluation. The program culminates with a Master's thesis or a clinical project.

Prospective students looking to be admitted must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and should have a discipline within social sciences.

Utah State University's MS and MMFT Programs

The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services offers a Master of Science and Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT).

The MS program (53 credit hours) has an emphasis in the research aspect of the field and gives the student a Master's thesis to complete.

The MMFT (47 credit hours) is more focused on clinical practice and experience, and does not give a Master's thesis at the end. Example courses include Applied Statistics, Human Development Theories, and Ethics and Professional Development in Marriage and Family Therapy.

LMFT Licensure in Utah

In order to apply for a licensure in the state of Utah, candidates will need at least 4,000 hours of clinical experience. At least 1,000 of these hours should be under supervision, and half of that must be with two clients at a time.

These numbers include graduate-level education earned in a Master’s degree or PhD. At minimum for the graduate program, at least 500 clinical hours are needed with half of that reserved for direct contact hours on family members and couples. Gaining a COAMFTE-accredited degree will meet the educational standards. Passing of the national exam is also needed prior to applying for licensure.

The state of Utah has over 500 workers in the marriage and family therapy field according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

They enjoy one of the top five average salaries in the country with over $70,900 offered annually. That figure jumps to well over $122,900 within the 90th percentile.
